Tehran Shomal Freeway Company (TSFC); formed by Ministry of Roads & Urban Development, Iran is undertaking the construction of an Alborz Tunnel between Tehran and Shomal Freeway.

The project involves the construction of 6.4km tunnel in the form of twin tunnels besides an exploratory tunnel with access, ventilation and emergency shafts.

More than 40 twin-tube tunnels making 2 x 40km will be required. The Alborz tunnel at an altitude of 2,450m is the longest twin-bored tunnel in the project with a length of 6.4km. The twin tubes are named as the East tube and the West tube.

The project will be executed as three phases namely the Phase 0, Phase I and Phase II.

Phase 0:

It includes the construction of service tunnel. The service tunnel is located between the main tunnel tubes and is used for site investigation, drainage and as access for the main tunnel construction. The length of the service tunnel is 6387m, including 314m of drill and blast tunnel previously excavated from the south

portal and 46 m for the TBM starting tube from the N-portal.

The complete TBM, the complete trailer as well as all auxiliary equipment for its operation were designed and supplied by Wirth (now Aker Solutions). The service tunnel was lined with rock bolts, wire mesh and shotcrete. Rock bolters are integrated into the machine and cover a roof section of 120 deg.

Works are carried out by Taloon Construction under the work supervision consultants Amberg Engineering. The latter is also responsible for the client's consultancy, the design and layout of the service tunnel.

Jäger Bau received a consulting contract for the TBM driving work under extremely unfavorable hydro-geological conditions.

The boring diameter of the TBM is 5.20m, with a cutterhead drive power of 1,200kW, advance thrust of 8,400 kN, cutterhead speed of 8.6 rpm max, nominal torque of 1,260 kNm, breakout torque of 2,000 kNm and total clamping force of 22,000 kN. There are 24 clamping cylinders. The total installed power is 1,500 kW. Behind the face, a 800 mm-wide belt collects the material at a speed of 0-2 m/s and a capacity of 480 cu m/h. The TBM started tunnelling in early September 2004 and completed in 2009.

Phoenix Scientific Industries (PSI) Ltd has been appointed as the equipment supply contractor; Laniz Consulting Engineers as consulting engineer; Organization of Investment and Economic and Technical Assistance of Iran (OIETAI) as financial advisor; General Mechanic Co as mechanical and electrical engineer. Metro-Style as engineering design consultant.

The main tunnel of 6.4km length will be executed as the North Bound in Phase I and South Bound in Phase II. The main tunnel is planned to be a 1m diameter tunnel with a length of 11.92m and 6,390 excavation of the tunnel 609.344m3.

The excavations works required for geological purposes before boring the main tunnels is currently underway. The work is being carried out by General Mechanic Co. Geodata Engineering S.p.A was appointed to provide design and engineering services. Abadgaran Margoon Company was appointed as the project consultant.

In February 2016, Request for Qualification (RFQ) was issued for Lot 2 of Tehran-Shomal Freeway in which the main tunnel is the part; whereas TSFC is still in the process preparing the bidding document in order to appoint the contractor.

In June 2017, The excavation works have been completed.


The project involves the construction of a 6.4Km tunnel between Tehran and Shomal Freeway.

The US$120 million project includes the following:
