Sunbird Energy (SNY) in joint venture with PetroSA is planning to construct a gas field in Cape Town, South Africa.
The project involves the development of Ibhubesi gas field with a production capacity of 100 million standard cubic feet of gas per day. It will be developed in two phases.
The project includes the construction of an onshore gas receiving facility, the installation of either a floating production, storage and offloading vessel (FPSO) or a semi-submersible production platform, the laying of a 400km, 18 inch diameter offshore pipeline from the production facility to a shore-crossing site located between Grotto Bay and Duynefontein and one on the Saldanha peninsula, an onshore pipeline between the shore crossing site and the Ankerlig Power Station near Atlantis and proposed end users in Saldanha.
RPS Energy UK performed the technical assessment study for the project in April 2013.
JP Kenny, part of Wood Group and Granherne Ltd, a subsidiary of KBR Inc., have been appointed to undertake front-end engineering and design (Pre-FEED) and FEED work.
MHA Petroleum Consultants has been appointed as a consulting engineer and WGK will provide engineering and project management services. Environmental pre-scoping assessment is being conducted by CCA Environmental (CCA).
In December 2014, SNY conducted public consultations on its environmental impact report (EIA).
In March 2016, SNY signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Eskom for investigating gas supply to the Ankerlig Power Station.
The Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) has been finalized and made public with a 30-day review and comment period from May 31, 2016 to July 1, 2016.
As of July 2017, SNY is in negotiations with Eskom for the supply of gas to Ankerlig Power Station and the gas supply agreement (GSA) is expected to be signed by the end of the third quarter of 2017. Subject to GSA, SNY will initiate the detailed FEED works.
The field is expected to begin production in the fourth quarter of 2021.
The project involves the development of Ibhubesi gas field located in Block2A, 400km north of Cape Town in South Africa.
The US$1,662 million project includes the following:
1. Construction of an onshore gas receiving facility
2. Installation of either a FPSO or a semi-submersible production platform
3. Laying of 400km offshore pipeline from the production facility
