The Road Infrastructure National Agency (RINA) is planning to undertake the construction of Shipka Peak Tunnel project in Gabrovo, Bulgaria.
The project involves the construction of a 3.2km, two-lane tunnel with a width of 10m, and height of 4.8m that goes through mountain terrain and beside the tunnel passage under the Shipka peak.
It includes the construction of stations, shafts, sewerage systems, and control rooms as well as an escape tunnel and other related infrastructure, and the installation of ventilation systems, fire fighting equipment, smoke extinguishers, traffic signals, LED lighting facilities, and CCTV camera.
The project is co-financed under the EU Cohesion Fund and the state budget under the operational program Transport 2007-2013.
In March 2012, the RINA received the environmental clearance from the Bulgarian Environment Ministry.
In February 2014, nine bidders submitted proposals for an advanced concept design. Mosty Consortium, consisting of Poland’s Mosty Katowice and its Bulgarian subsidiary, Mosty Bulgaria, were the lowest bidders among them.
In June 2014, RIA awarded an advanced concept design contract to Mosty Consortium.
Design activities are underway. The project is scheduled for completion by 2020.
