The Ministry of Transport, Maritime and Communications (MoTMC), Turkey, is planning to construct the Grand Istanbul Tunnel project in Turkey.
The project involves the construction of a three-level, 6.5km road and rail tunnel with a diameter of 16.8m. The railway level of the tunnel will be equipped with automatic signaling and auto-deceleration and acceleration systems.
The tunnel will be built 110m from the sea surface and the depth of the sea where it crosses the Bosporus will be 60-65m.
It also includes the construction of two road carriageways positioned above and below the railway line and related infrastructure, the installation of signalling and ventilation systems, fire fighting equipment, smoke extinguishers, traffic signals, led lights and CCTV equipment.
The project will be developed on public-private-partnership (PPP) mode on build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis.
A study has been carried for a period of 10 months since 2014. and MoTMC unveiled detail plans on February 27, 2015.
On June 19, 2015, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) approved the development.
On December 22, 2015, MoTMC issued tender for the procurement of consultant to provide research, project and engineering services. However, the tenders were cancelled in October 2016
The engineering studies would be conducted on land, sea and estuary drilling, and includes geophysical, geotechnical and geological conditions, routes and preliminary and final feasibility surveys to determine ground data.
MoTMC is planning to reissue tenders to appoint a consultant, which is expected by the end of December 2016. Subject to further planning and engineering.
In February 2017, Four companies submitted financial proposal tender bids for the survey, project, and engineering. Four companies are Tecnimont Civil Construction SPA, Italfer SPA - Sintagma Srl Joint Venture, Arcadis - Prota Engineering Project Consultancy Services Inc. Joint Venture and Yüksel Proje Uluslararasi AS.
In April 2017, MoTC appointed Yuksel Project International Inc. as the design, engineering and consultancy services contract.
Planning activities are underway and construction activities are scheduled for completion by 2023.
