The Government of Mozambique (GoM), in partnership with Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) and Sociedade hidroeléctrica de Moçambique (Sheza) is planning to undertake the construction of a 1,000MW hydroelectric power plant on Zambeze river in Chemba, Sofala Province, Mozambique.
The project involves the construction of a dam, a power plant, substations and powerhouses, the installation of turbines and the laying of transmission lines.
The project will be developed in two phases. The first phase includes the construction of a 400MW power plant and the second phase includes the construction of a 600MW power plant.
GoM plans to develop the project through public-private partnership (PPP).
In January 2015, Mozambican government has given a green light for developing the project.
The government agency Zambezi Watercourse Commission (ZAMCOM) is in the process to select consultants to develop a strategic plan, harmonize national water laws and upgrade the hydro-meteorological system for the Zambezi River Basin Management Project.
