The Eastern Cape Department of Health (ECDoH) is undertaking the upgrade of the Isiphethu District Hospital in Ntabankulu, Eastern Cape, South Africa.
The project involves the upgrade of the existing hospital building, which will be implemented in five phases.
The first phase includes the preparatory works, such as the construction of platforms for the new hospital buildings and the installation of new bulk services, several dilapidated buildings will also be demolished to make way for the new structure.
Second and third phase includes the construction works for the main hospital buildings and the hospital services block, which are planned to take about 30 months and 18 months respectively to complete; however, both construction phases are planned to be completed simultaneously.
Fourth phase includes the construction of the ward blocks. Four ward blocks have been designed to accommodate beds and include a general tuberculosis ward.
Fifth phase includes the refurbishment and conversion of the existing hospital building to provide staff accommodation and additional new housing building.
The roll-out of the phases of construction has been structured in such a way that the completion of all the hospital construction works will conclude concurrently to ensure that commissioning of all sections of the hospital takes place simultaneously.
The project includes the construction of operating theaters, outpatient wards, inpatient wards, administrative buildings, and parking and related facilities, and the installation of equipment, and safety systems.
Coega Development Corporation (CDC) has been appointed as the implementing agent.
In February 2014, works on the first phase commenced.
The tenders for the second phase which includes the main construction of hospital complex and housing was issued on August 7, 2015, with the submission deadline of September 15, 2015.
In December 2015, the excavation and demolition works were completed.
On June 30, 2016, Globacon Pty Ltd and Qinisa Holdings were appointed as main contractors.
On October 24, 2016, construction works commenced and are underway. Project is expected to completed in October 2019.
