Durban Point Development Company (DPDC) a joint venture formed by the eThekwini Municipality and ROC Point Pty Ltd majority owned by UEM Sunrise Berhad is planning to expand the beachfront facilities in Durban, South Africa.

The project involves the development of beachfront facilities, which is planned to be implemented in phases.

The project includes the construction of a 54,600m2 signature five to six-star hotel with 350 rooms, a 38,300m2 luxury condominium complex with 360 units, a 48,000m2 retail complex that will host daily food stores, fashion boutiques and branded outlets.

The first phase of the project includes the construction of a residential tower, retail mall and a hotel. The exact scope of the other phases are yet to be disclosed.

It also includes the US$23.5 million beachfront promenade extension, which includes the construction of a continuous elevated structure spanning 750m in length and 30m in width reaching the Northern Breakwaters at the harbor entrance channel, public amenities, amphitheater (auditorium) at the center of the promenade, change rooms, ablution and staff facilities, a lifeguard facility and restaurant facilities and public parking and dedicated parking for clubs underneath the promenade.

Transnet Ltd. has been appointed as contractor for the promenade extension works.

On December 1, 2017, the US$21.8 million was funded for the promenade extension.

Expansion works on the promenade are expected to commence by the end of first quarter of 2018. Simultaneously, planning activities on the rest of the development are on-going.
