Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation (APGENCO) is planning to undertake the construction of an ultra mega thermal power plant in Prakasam, Andhra Pradesh, India.
The plant will be owned by APGENCO and a special purpose vehicle will be incorporated into the development of the project.
The project involves the construction of 4,000MW (5x800MW) coal based thermal power plant and is planned to be developed in two phases. The first phase includes the construction of 2x800MW coal-based power plant and the second phase features the construction of three units of 800MW each.
Coal will be used as primary source for the power generation. The required coal for the development of proposed Vodarevu UMPP will be sourced through blended coal in the ratio of 40:60 (imported: domestic).
In August 2010, the Power Finance Corporation sanctioned a financial aid of US$1,471 million for the development of the first phase of the project.
The National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) was appointed as the environmental consultant. The scope of work includes the identification of intake and outfall locations for cooling water and comprehensive marine EIA studies for the proposed project. NIO has completed EIA studies on January 31, 2013.
APGENCO has received all mandatory clearances including environmental clearance for the project.
In February 2015, AP government has submitted the applications to the Union coal ministry seeking allocation of coal blocks.
Planning activities are underway for the proposed project.
