The demand for acetaldehyde is driven by its use as a precursor in the production of pyridines, pentaerythritol, crotonaldehyde, acetic acid, and acetate esters.

Around 35% of the global acetaldehyde was consumed for pyridines. Pentaerythritol, acetic acid, and acetate esters follow pyridines. Pyridines also act as a reactant in the production of ethylidene diacetate, a precursor to vinyl acetate used to produce polyvinyl acetate (PVA). Moreover, it is widely used as a plasticizer in the plastics industry and paint binder in the paints & coatings industry. Moreover, acetaldehyde is combined with urea to produce resins.

The growing downstream demand for pyridines and pentaerythritol, from pesticides, pharmaceuticals, resins, and coatings industries, acts as the main driving force for acetaldehyde. Another driver for acetaldehyde is the strong adhesive end-user market. Most of the adhesives are PVA-based and acetaldehyde is a precursor for vinyl acetate used to produce PVA. Based on above factors, the acetaldehyde market has been segmented based on applications and end-users.Acetaldehyde usage in the manufacturing of acetic acid, however, has been declining and been replaced by low-cost methanol carbonylation process. In addition, the demand for acetaldehyde has decreased because n-butyraldehyde (used in the production of plasticizer alcohols) that was earlier produced from acetaldehyde is now being generated from propylene. Acetaldehyde has been listed as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). It is also known to aggravate the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. These health concerns are some of the major limitations for the growth of acetaldehyde market.

Areas with Scope for Acetaldehyde

Asia-Pacific is the largest consumer of acetaldehyde. In 2016, China, followed by India and Western Europe, was the largest consumer of acetaldehyde, which accounted for about half of the global consumption. India has been a developing market for acetaldehyde, in recent times. Acetaldehyde consumption in Japan is expected to grow during 2017-2022 (the forecast period), due to the consumption growth of ethyl acetate. South American and the Middle Eastern markets are expected to decelerate, during 2017-2022 (the forecast period), due to the minimal or no use and production of acetaldehyde.
