According to the report, the introduction of robotic waterjets is a key driver contributing to this market’s growth. The application of robotic waterjet ranges from cutting, cleaning of various materials, and drilling. The whole process is carried out by the jet of water or high pressure water stream. The intensity of the pressure applied to the cleaning and the cutting operations varies greatly. An automated system enables the operation to be carried out without the guidance of an operator and takes much less time compared with a manual cutter, besides minimizing raw material wastage. Robotic waterjet welding is replacing many machining operations such as shearing, milling and punching, sawing and even processes like plasma and laser cutting for composite components and forged parts. But robotic waterjet cutting has its major application in the automotive industry.

Further, the report states that lack of precision is one of the major challenges the market is facing. Waterjet cutting is not as precise as laser cutting technology. The minimum slit size of the cut formed by waterjet cutting is 0.02 inches. In the case of thin materials, the high force induced by the waterjet cutting machine can deform the sheet and could alter the shape and uniformity of the material. However, waterjet cutting does not cause burring during the cutting process, as there is no thermal stress induced. But the metal surface may have a sand blasted appearance due to the high pressure abrasive materials used in the cutting process.
