Press Release
Technavio Announces the Publication of its Research Report – Global Silicon Photonics Market 2016-2020
Technavio recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global silicon photonics market: Luxtera, and Mellanox Technologies.
Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Aifotec AG, Aurrion, Avago Technologies, Bright Photonics BV, Cisco Systems, Finisar Corporation, Hamamatsu Photonics, Huawei, IBM Corporation, Infinera, Intel, Keopsys, NeoPhotonics, Oclaro, OneChip Photonics, Skorpios technologies, and STMicroelectronics.
Commenting on the report, an analyst from Technavio’s team said: “Emergence of optical data centers will be a key trend for market growth. Disaggregation refers to separating computer networking, storage, and power distribution resources into modules stored in the rack. This means that each server within a rack will have its own group of resources. When the resource types are disaggregated, they can be grouped together and distributed throughout the rack, which will improve upgradability, flexibility, and reliability while lowering costs. The silicon photonics technology will help revamp connections as short as five inches and allow high-speed optical links to and from the processor. Such high-performance data centers are already in demand from technology giants like Facebook and Google. More companies will adopt this technology for their data center requirements, and this trend will see more investments during the forecast period.”
According to the report, reduction in transportation costs will be a key driver for market growth. The adoption of silicon photonics has benefited the carriers largely. This network structure has allowed them to transport to multiple clients on a single wavelength and preserve their specific requirements. The overall cost of transportation has also fallen, as they don’t need separate wavelengths for separate clients, thereby ensuring efficient bandwidth utilization.
Further, the report states that lack of standards and guidelines will be a challenge for the market. In the initial stages of implementation of silicon photonics technology, key features such as performance monitoring, mapping of client signals, isolation, and fault detection were missing. The vendors in the market use their own methods for mapping client traffic, performance monitoring, and fault detection or isolation. Single carrier networks using equipment from a single vendor did not face any issues of standardization. However, with the growth of the market, expansion and inter-connection across networks gave rise to issues related to standardization.
