Samsung Electronics and LG Display already produce flexible AMOLED displays that are used in mobile phones and wearable devices. Samsung's Galaxy S7 Edge uses a 5.5-inch AMOLED on a plastic substrate, which bends around the edges. LG Display manufactures flexible AMOLED displays that are installed in Apple watches.”
According to the report, one of the major drivers for this market is Superiority of OLED display over LCD. LCD and OLED display are two technologies that currently co-exist in the display market for smartphones and TV sets. In LCD, white light passes through a color filter using liquid crystals to create a variety of colors. By manipulating the electric current sent to each sub-pixel, it is possible to control the amount of light that goes through, and therefore, control the subpixel’s color intensity. All LCDs are required to have some form of backlight from white light, thus causing this display to be thick.
Further, the report states that one of the major factors hindering the growth of this market is Threat of disruption of new technology. A display technology that is likely to disrupt the OLED display market is the introduction of micro-LED displays. Micro-LED displays consist of arrays of microscopic LEDs forming individual pixel elements. Micro-LED is a promising display technology, as it has the potential to enable brighter and more efficient displays compared with OLEDs. It is cheaper, but there are still technical challenges to overcome, and it is estimated that micro-LEDs will not be commercialized before 2020.
