Airborne capabilities are determined by the success of pilot's efficiency combined with advanced technologies. Traditionally, radars were used for the safer operation of the fleet by maintaining a safe distance from the ground level and the aircraft trajectory. However, they lacked the angular resolution to detect small, natural, and fabricated obstacles such as trees, cables, and poles.

In order to enhance airborne security, industry experts developed laser-based technology to combat-critical tasks and ensure crew safety.

In 2005, Selex ES and Italian Ministry of Defense introduced airborne LOAM systems for military transport and naval freight helicopters. This system prevents detects sand classifies obstacles in the trajectory of the fleet and provides the crew with audio and visual information. The main components of the system are sensor head unit (SHU), control panel (CP) and display unit (DU). This system is still in the testing phase for manned and unmanned aircraft in both civil and military sectors.
