This IDC Market Perspective provides a preliminary unit shipment range for worldwide hard disk drive (HDD) units by HDD drive class and estimated supplier market share for 2Q19."HDD demand from cloud service providers improved for the second quarter in a row helping to offset lower client HDD demand and lower demand for performance-optimized HDDs in 2Q19," according to John Rydning, research vice president, Worldwide Hard Disk Drives. "Worldwide HDD unit and petabyte demand in 2H19 may be more unpredictable than usual because of extraneous market factors, the reduction of HDD inventory by some OEM customers, and the pace of the upturn of cloud service provider customer HDD petabyte demand."
