Worldwide 3D Printer Forecast, 2019–2023: An Analysis
This IDC study provides the worldwide 3D printer market forecast across major regions for 2019–2023. It also provides a summary of the worldwide 3D printer hardware forecast for 2019–2023. Each of the seven major 3D printing technologies are included and projected across three major geographic regions. While each of the regional forecasts is more conservative than in the past, the biggest change from prior year worldwide forecasts is the change in the shipments coming from the Asia/Pacific (including Japan) region. The dramatically lower number of shipments in the region are particularly due to the lower-than-expected level of shipments into the education sector in China. The government of China changed its planned investment into 3D printers in the education sector. Furthermore, organizations in China still prefer print service providers as an approach to get things done as opposed to direct hardware investment. "The maturity of 3D printing technologies is enabling adoption in real manufacturing," said Tim Greene, research director in IDC's 3D Printing Research group. "It's definitely not just hype. The improved speed and economics across 3D printing technologies is allowing manufacturers to realize some of the same benefits in production, such as faster cycle times and reduced costs, that they have achieved in prototyping for many years."
