2016 IDC FutureScape CIO Agenda Prediction 9: Supporting Digital Transformation with Crowdsourcing
This IDC study, written for CIOs and senior technology executives, explores the issues raised in the CIO Agenda FutureScape Prediction 9: "By 2018, 80% of development organizations supporting DX will incorporate collective genius and crowdsourcing into their projects as a regular practice." Driving this prediction is the confluence of a number of major trends: increasing adoption of 3rd Platform technologies; open source technologies and solutions; a compelling value proposition of the shared, virtual economy; a growing workforce of freelancers; increasing business demands for DX; and CIOs under pressure to deliver DX at an accelerated pace. This study focuses on crowdsourcing relevant to CIOs and other IT decision makers as a delivery option for projects, application development, and testing. It defines crowdsourcing, explores its positioning with respect to other delivery options like outsourcing and in-house development, and covers the key drivers for crowdsourcing. It also discusses key benefits and challenges and why crowdsourcing is becoming increasingly relevant to CIOs, especially in terms of DX. In conclusion, the study provides guidance on how best to leverage crowdsourcing."The rapidly evolving and changing business demands for digital transformation cannot simply be met in a timely and cost-effective manner with in-house-only skills and resources and traditional delivery mechanisms," says Sanjay Gupta, adjunct research analyst with IDC's Research Network. "Crowdsourcing offers a viable alternative to meet such demands effectively and efficiently. CIOs who rely only on their in-house skills and resources and traditional delivery mechanisms are likely to find themselves in a tight position, especially for accomplishing DX.
