The IDC Health Insights Perspective summarizes the key themes and discussion points from the eHealth Week 2016 hosted by the Dutch Ministry of Health, the European Commission, and HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management System Society) Europe in Amsterdam. At the event, European healthcare executives — alongside small delegations from other non-European countries and event sponsors — discussed some of the hottest topics on the industry's agenda through presentations, panel discussions, plenary sessions, and informal dialogues. The Dutch Minister of Health, Edith Schipper, called attention to patient engagement as a key enabler of better quality of care and lower healthcare costs. Ireland showed how its cloud-first digital strategy for its healthcare system is paving the way for the greater adoption of cloud solution in healthcare. In line with the global need to develop an omni-channel transformation, the European Commission presented the final version of its privacy code of conduct for mhealth apps. The theme of 2016 edition of eHealth Week was "You, at the heart of transition", with a clear focus on people — IT professionals, clinical staff, patients — and how they are changing the healthcare system. eMental health and ehealth interoperability were discussed from different perspectives during many sessions. However, achieving the objectives discussed at the conference will require the collaboration of healthcare providers, policy makers, and patients to embrace digital transformation:Training and education programs for health professionals should be jointly organized by policy makers and IT professionals to educate about the benefits and the challenges of technology in the healthcare industry.Policy makers and healthcare providers should cooperate to facilitate digital and mobile patient engagement.IT professionals and vendors should improve their knowledge of healthcare providers' processes to propose innovative, interoperable solutions that can be easily used by both clinicians and patients.
