COVID-19-Driven Work Transformation: A Comprehensive View of Ongoing Future of Work Investments in Europe

While the term "digital transformation" has become common in recent years, the COVID-19 pandemic made many organizations realize that it was time to move from planning to action. While some companies were struggling to function due to the economic slowdown, others reacted very quickly, offering a differentiated portfolio of services and striving to function as normal under the uncertain conditions. The pandemic convinced CEOs that dedicated investment in work transformation is a must, and that it plays a role when employees are choosing their ideal employer. It is not only about monetary compensation — human resource policies should cover such aspects as a comfortable and secure working environment, access to innovative technologies, training, and programs to ensure employees' wellbeing. This study examines important aspects of work transformation, including flexible working style, human augmentation by technology, human capital (culture, skills, etc.), and spending by industry. The study is enriched by IDC survey results reflecting the importance of this topic. "To lay the appropriate groundwork for a sustainable digital transformation, CEOs, CTOs, and CHROs must adopt a human-centric and green Future of Work perspective. In tandem with outward-facing efforts to improve the customer experience, C-levels executives should focus attention and investments inward and collaborate closely with HR to design a better work experience for employees." — Senior Research Analyst Soheyla Mirshahi, Customer Insights and Analysis, IDC
