The Japanese Mobile Market was worth around $70 billion at the end of 2006, consisting of 98 million mobile connections.
By 2011 we expect the market to grow to 120 million connections equivalent to 93% penetration of the population, driven largely by take up from the youth and elderly consumer segments. We anticipate strong growth in 3G connections during the period, achieving 67% penetration of the population in five years.
Contract and prepaid ARPU is expected to decline during the period driven by operator price reductions, although this will be offset in part by consumers substituting fixed telephone calls with mobile telephone calls.
