Abstract

In spring 2000, the stock market had a severe downturn and venture capital funding slowed. Online advertising growth dropped from 55 percent in 2000 to just over five percent in 2001. Smaller online players without sustainable business models disappeared or were acquired; despite the bleak picture, Internet usage continues to grow. Traffic since 1999 has increased dramatically—the number of unique visitors grew almost 37 percent in the last two years while total usage minutes are up 150 percent since January 1999. Looking forward, the next few years will see growth of new users slowing due to already-high penetration rates, but usage will continue to grow—fueled by an increasingly tenured audience.
