Oleoresins Market: Pricing Progression (United States), 2003-2013 AbstractThe Frost & Sullivan research service titled U.S. Essential Oils and Oleoresins Market provides an overview of revenues and unit shipments, as well as analysis of key trends, challenges, and forecasts. In this research, Frost & Sullivan's expert analysts thoroughly examine the markets for the following products: citrus oil, mint oil, spice and herb oils and oleoresins, together with the end-user’s market analysis for both the essential oils and oleoresins.
The U.S. essential oils and oleoresins market continues to see significant growth, backed largely by the growing preference among consumers for natural ingredients in the foods they consume as well as other personal care and house hold products they utilize. This apart, the development of the flavor industry, which includes beverages, confectionery, savory, dairy, and pharmaceuticals, is also likely to have a high impact on the market’s growth. The beverage application segment, in particular, is seeing appreciable growth with manufacturers capitalizing on the trend towards flavored beverages by introducing beverages such as flavored waters, soft drinks, health drinks; fruit-based drinks, and even flavored alcoholic and tea-based drinks. While the above segment remains the largest application area for essential oils, oleoresins are finding major application in the savory segment and more specifically, the meat industry and ethnic foods segment.
However, essential oils and oleoresins are facing fierce competition from synthetic flavorings that are comparatively less expensive. What is more, nature-identical flavors are also included under the broad heading of synthetics, because they are also substances that are chemically identical to natural substances, but are obtained by chemical processes. "An example of synthetic flavorings is ethyl vanillin, which has a very similar flavor profile to that of natural vanillin from vanilla, but is produced artificially," notes Sneha Pasricha, the analyst of this research service. "Such synthetic flavorings and fragrance chemicals are usually preferred over natural essential oils and oleoresins due to their affordable prices, availability throughout the year, and more consistent flavor profile."
Supercritical Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Extraction Technique Emerges as an Efficient Replacement for Solvent Extraction
Technology wise, supercritical CO2 extraction is gaining recognition as well as preference among oleoresin manufacturers due to its ability to yield solvent-free oleoresins. Supercritical CO2 is CO2 gas used under conditions of high temperature and pressure. This process converts the gas into a fluid that, in turn, aids in the extraction of the oleoresins from the botanicals. The major advantage with this technology is that when the normal temperature and pressure are reverted, CO2 returns to a gaseous state and can be removed completely. In addition, microencapsulation and spray dried technology are also gaining prevalence as the powders extracted through these processes exhibit a much uniform dispersion property into the product in which they are added. Moreover, the flavor is much more stable and effective.
With regard to product segments, the citrus oil segment is the largest in terms of applications in end-user markets such as beverages, confectionery, savory, and others. Demand for citrus oils and herb and spice oils are growing at a faster pace compared to that for mint oil. "Overall, the U.S. essential oils and oleoresins market is mature and is experiencing low to moderate growth rates," says Pasricha. "Given that the market is becoming more commoditized, market participants will do well to concentrate on providing a high level of customer service; focusing on a niche area; exploring new application areas, developing innovative products; and focusing on the supply-chain management."
