Whole Slide Imaging Market Growth, Analysis - Segmented by Technology (Scanners, IT Infrastructure, Viewer and Image Management System), Application, End-User and Geography - Trends, and Forecast (2018 - 2023)
The whole slide imaging market was valued at USD 445.6 million in 2017, is expected to register a CAGR of about 17.00% during the forecast period, 2018-2023. The whole slide imaging involves physical slides, which are transformed into digital resources that can be analyzed on any computer, easily stored, and quickly shared with colleagues wherever they are. Whole slide imaging (WSI) refers to scanning of conventional glass slides to produce digital slides. It is the most recent imaging modality being employed by pathology departments, worldwide. WSI continues to gain traction among pathologists for diagnostic, educational, and research purposes.
Growing Popularity of Virtual Slides as Compared To Physical Slides Boost the Growth of Whole Slide Imaging Market
With the growing demand for networking in hospitals and collaborations, comes the need for the correct tools used in pathology and research. A virtual slide is created when glass slides are digitally scanned to provide a high-resolution digital image using a digital scanning system for the purpose of medical digital image analysis. Digital slides can be retrieved from a storage system and viewed on a computer screen, by running image management software on a standard web browser and assessed in exactly the same way as on a microscope. Virtual slide microscopy offers both pathologists and researchers a unique potential to acquire complete slides at high magnification and resolution, to enable diagnosis, analysis, and archiving samples for discussion, both remotely and in online conferences. The advantage of virtual slides archived on a network server can be individually controlled and viewed by a large number of simultaneous users, moreover, is the key to a wide range of potential applications of virtual microscopy, from the production of educational material to the integration of hospital patient record systems. The error rate of WSI is approximately 1-5%. Virtual microscopy systems are ideal for computerized examinations of histology and histopathology materials. Whole slide images have also been used for remotely viewing immunostains, showcasing pathology slides at tumor boards, saving selected consult slides before they are returned, archiving slides before they are used as a cellular material for molecular studies, and performing image analysis. Virtual slide technology enables users to exceed the limits of conventional digital microscopy and telepathology in both the size and the resolution of image files and also can be stored for a very long time. Thus, the increasing use of virtual slides is resulting in the growth of whole slide imaging market.
High Cost of Whole Slide Imaging Systems Hinders the Growth of Whole Slide Imaging Market
As per the public advisory panel (2009), FDA publicly announced that WSI devices are in the highest risk classification, that is, a Class III device requiring a PMA regulatory path and placing WSI in the highest risk category for patients. The FDA, however, has never formally classified WSI devices. Until recently, the organization had not yet cleared or approved WSI for routine surgical pathology diagnosis to replace conventional light microscopy, whereas, several WSI systems had been cleared for limited use as Class II devices, for the quantification of immunohistochemical stains (e.g., ER, PR, and HER2) using image algorithms, and only after the primary diagnosis has been made using glass slides and a microscope. However, the rate of adoption of digital pathology (DP) has been slow, especially in the United States, DP, specifically WSI, for primary diagnostic use in clinical practice, was awaiting the entrance of devices to be cleared by authorities of US FDA. However, US FDA in April 2017 permitted the marketing of the Philips IntelliSite Pathology Solution (PIPS), the first WSI system that allows review and interpretation of digital surgical pathology slides, prepared from biopsied tissue, however, the adoption rate is quite low. Also, there are several important guideline documents on the validation, moreover, the implementation of WSI systems for diagnostic use have been developed by professional bodies, such as the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the Canadian Association of Pathologists, the Royal College of Pathologists in the United Kingdom, the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia, and the American Telemedicine Association. All the above documents while not standards of care, provide an important resource for new adopters of this technology. In the near future, these guidelines are likely to be revised on a regular basis to account for advances in technology, changing regulations, and emerging literature describing the experiences with WSI (good and bad) in diverse practice settings. Thus, all these regulatory approvals for WSI devices are hindering the growth of WSI market in different regions.
Market Segmentation Insights for the Whole Slide Imaging Market
Insights in technology type, which is further segmented into scanners, IT infrastructures, viewers and Image management software. Scanner dominates the market with a share of 42.9% in 2017 as the use of scanners in whole slide imaging is to scan more than thousands of slides within a short time period and also a standard scanner gives high speed of scanning, high image quality, fast slide-loading mechanisms, scan types, and less operator time. All these advantages are augmenting the growth of the scanners. It also has the highest CAGR in the technology segment during the future forecast.
Insights in the application segment that is further divided into Telepathology, Cytopathology, Immunohistochemistry, and Hematopathology. Telepathology has the largest
share in the market with a share of 48.2% in 2017. Factors attributing its largest share are increasing incidence of cancer globally, high accuracy and speed in the diagnosis. Also, telepathology can be the best solution, enabling pathologists to remotely view digitized stained tissue slides. However, Immunohistochemistry has the highest CAGR in the market as it widely adopted in laboratories, education and research institutes for faster assessment of samples.
Based on end-user the market is further segmented into Education, Research and Clinical. Clinical has the largest share in the market that is about 42.6% as it is utilized for clinical work, for example, telepathology, training, and research. Also, it is likely to reduce long-term costs and avoid the risk of losing or breaking valuable patient slides during transport, eliminate superfluous paperwork, improve turnaround times (TATs), and effectively distribute workload across a group of pathologists, who may work at different locations.
North America is dominating the Whole Slide Imaging market
North America, owing to factors such as rising adoption of digital pathology and an increase in awareness regarding growing advantages of whole slide imaging over the traditional histopathological slides imaging, is dominating the whole slide imaging market. Furthermore, the growing need of whole slide analysis due to a rise in disease prevalence in the region and growing trend of adoption of digital platform in healthcare sectors would further boost the market growth in North America. For instances, about 1.5 billion histopathological slides are investigated manually each year in the U.S. alone, which is likely to augment a huge demand for whole slide imaging among the end users in the region.
