The error rate of WSI is approximately 1-5%. Virtual microscopy systems are ideal for computerized examinations of histology and histopathology materials. Whole slide images have also been used for remotely viewing immunostains, showcasing pathology slides at tumor boards, saving selected consult slides before they are returned, archiving slides before they are used as a cellular material for molecular studies, and performing image analysis. Virtual slide technology enables users to exceed the limits of conventional digital microscopy and telepathology in both the size and the resolution of image files and also can be stored for a very long time. High Cost of Whole Slide Imaging Systems Hinders the Growth of Whole Slide Imaging Market

As per the public advisory panel (2009), FDA publicly announced that WSI devices are in the highest risk classification, that is, a Class III device requiring a PMA regulatory path and placing WSI in the highest risk category for patients. The FDA, however, has never formally classified WSI devices. Until recently, the organization had not yet cleared or approved WSI for routine surgical pathology diagnosis to replace conventional light microscopy, whereas, several WSI systems had been cleared for limited use as Class II devices, for the quantification of immunohistochemical stains (e.g., ER, PR, and HER2) using image algorithms, and only after the primary diagnosis has been made using glass slides and a microscope. However, the rate of adoption of digital pathology (DP) has been slow, especially in the United States, DP, specifically WSI, for primary diagnostic use in clinical practice, was awaiting the entrance of devices to be cleared by authorities of US FDA. However, US FDA in April 2017 permitted the marketing of the Philips IntelliSite Pathology Solution (PIPS), the first WSI system that allows review and interpretation of digital surgical pathology slides, prepared from biopsied tissue, however, the adoption rate is quite low. Also, there are several important guideline documents on the validation, moreover, the implementation of WSI systems for diagnostic use have been developed by professional bodies, such as the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the Canadian Association of Pathologists, the Royal College of Pathologists in the United Kingdom, the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia, and the American Telemedicine Association. All the above documents while not standards of care, provide an important resource for new adopters of this technology. In the near future, these guidelines are likely to be revised on a regular basis to account for advances in technology, changing regulations, and emerging literature describing the experiences with WSI (good and bad) in diverse practice settings. Thus, all these regulatory approvals for WSI devices are hindering the growth of WSI market in different regions.
