Emergence of Golden Apple Snail as a Serious Rice Pest

The golden apple snail is a fresh water snail which is one of the major rice pest in Asia & S.E Asia. As application of synthetic molluscicides has a toxic effect on non-target organisms, hence giving rise to the need for botanical molluscicides as an alternative. As per the 2017 reports of Government of New South Wales that this snail is also a serious threat to Australia’s rice industry. Under the Biosecurity Act 2015, golden apple snail is classified as prohibited matter. The Rice Biosecurity Zone has been established for the long term management of various pests and diseases, including golden apple snail.

North America to Dominate the Market Growth

North America has the highest share in the market, accounting for around 37% of the global market share in 2017. USA dominates the North American market, with a share of around 78% by value of the total molluscicides market in North America. Molluscicides form a small but significant segment of the US pesticides market. The mollusk chemical control products available in the market are limited in number, compared to herbicides, fungicides and insecticides. The metaldehyde-based products are dominating the market and can be applied to many crops; but due to their sensitivity towards rains, they become non economical for the farmers.
