Description

Angola won its independence from Portugal in 1975 but the various factions which fought for independence failed to reach an understanding on future governance and a civil war ensued with the Soviet Union?Cuba backing the governing MPLA and the USA/South Africa backing the rebel UNITA. The civil war only eneded in 2002 with the death of the UNITA leader Savimbi. Angola exports mostly oil and some diamonds and its agricultural sector is gradually recovering from the devastation of the civil war and the legacy of landmines. In many respects it is a typical sub-Saharan African country but internationally solvent due to the oil sector.
