A Photoionization Detector (PID) Lamp is a device used in analytical chemistry and environmental monitoring to detect and measure the concentration of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air or in gas samples. VOCs are a group of chemicals that can easily evaporate into the air and may pose health and environmental risks.
The PID lamp operates based on the principle of photoionization. It emits high-energy ultraviolet (UV) light, typically in the range of 10.2 to 11.7 electronvolts (eV), into a sample gas. When the UV light interacts with the VOC molecules in the sample, it causes the molecules to ionize, or lose electrons, creating positively charged ions and free electrons. The magnitude of ionization is proportional to the concentration of VOCs in the sample.
