Description

The global High Temperature Polyimide (PI) Film market size is predicted to grow from US$ 1385 million in 2025 to US$ 2275 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.4% from 2026 to 2032.

In 2025, global high temperature polyimide film production capacity is approximately 145,000 tons, with actual output around 118,000 tons. The average selling price is about US$12,000 per ton, with electronic-grade ultra-thin films (≤12.5μm) priced significantly higher. Gross margins typically range between 22% and 38%, depending on monomer cost, film thickness, dielectric grade, and downstream application mix. High-temperature polyimide film is a high-performance polymer film produced through polycondensation of dianhydride and diamine monomers followed by imidization. It is characterized by excellent thermal stability, dielectric strength, mechanical toughness, and chemical resistance. Short-term heat resistance can reach above 400°C without melting, as polyimide is a thermosetting aromatic polymer without a true melting point. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of conventional PI films is generally in the range of 300–360°C, depending on molecular backbone design.

Upstream includes key monomers such as pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), biphenyl tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA), and various aromatic diamines, along with high-purity solvents (e.g., NMP). Midstream involves solution casting, stretching, thermal imidization, surface treatment, and slitting. Downstream applications include flexible printed circuits (FPC), semiconductor insulation layers, lithium battery insulation, aerospace wiring insulation, display substrates, and high-temperature label materials. Technological barriers lie in molecular design, ultra-thin film uniformity control, and dielectric property optimization.

The high temperature polyimide film market is structurally driven by electronics miniaturization and high-frequency communication technologies. Flexible printed circuits, foldable displays, and semiconductor packaging require materials that combine thermal stability with dimensional precision and dielectric reliability. Growth in electric vehicles and energy storage systems further increases demand for high-performance insulation films. Ultra-thin PI films for advanced semiconductor and display applications represent the fastest-growing segment, albeit with high technical barriers and capital intensity. Raw material cost volatility—particularly aromatic dianhydrides—directly impacts profitability. In the medium term, domestic substitution in key markets and supply chain localization trends are reshaping competitive dynamics. Long-term growth will depend on advancements in low-dielectric constant PI formulations and improved process control for sub-10 micron film production.
