Description

The global Data Center Switchgear market size is predicted to grow from US$ 2401 million in 2025 to US$ 4017 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.8% from 2026 to 2032.

Data Center Switchgear (covering medium voltage (MV) and low voltage (LV) segments) refers to integrated metal-enclosed switchgear deployed in the power supply and distribution system of data centers, designed for power access, distribution, isolation, protection and monitoring.

The MV segment typically operates at voltage levels of 10–35kV, or 11/13.8/15/20/33kV for overseas applications, while the LV segment commonly runs at 400/415V or 480V. In terms of physical form, such equipment generally takes the shape of floor-standing metal cabinets arranged in rows. Internally, it consists of key components including the main busbar system, circuit breaker/load switch units, isolation and earthing mechanisms, current transformer/voltage transformer (CT/VT) measurement units, relay protection & measurement and control devices, secondary wiring harnesses, and communication interfaces.

For MV products, common configurations include Air Insulated Switchgear (AIS) metal-clad withdrawable type (such as KYN series), Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS)/Compact Gas Insulated Switchgear (C-GIS), and Ring Main Units (RMU). On the LV side, the equipment is mainly metal-enclosed switchgear/switchboards, incorporating functional units such as incoming lines, bus tie, outgoing feeders, reactive power compensation, UPS input/output, and generator paralleling/switching.

Within data center scenarios, this type of switchgear is usually installed at critical nodes in the power chain, which follows the sequence of utility power/substation → MV distribution → transformer → LV main distribution → UPS/distribution branch → IT load. It is engineered to meet the requirements of high reliability, maintainability, selective protection, and redundant power supply architectures (N+1/2N).

Driven by capital expenditures in AI computing power and cloud services, the demand for data center switchgear (MV/LV switchgear) is showing a structural upward trend: data center electricity consumption accounted for approximately 1.5% of the global total in 2024 (around 415 TWh). The IEA predicts that under the base scenario, data center electricity consumption will nearly double to about 945 TWh by 2030, driving the continuous expansion of park-level power reception and distribution capacity. Meanwhile, growing constraints on grid connection and capacity expansion in various regions have led grid operators to impose access conditions such as "own power supply/curtailable loads" for new large-load projects, forcing operators to lock in the production capacity and delivery schedules of power transformation, distribution and switchgear equipment earlier.

At the product level, medium-voltage (MV) switchgear is mostly configured around the main chain of "reliable power reception, sectioning, and feeder supply to pad-mounted transformers/main transformers", while low-voltage (LV) switchgear forms a systematic project of "highly selective protection + maintainability" together with UPS/distribution branches. The increase in IT density brought by generative AI is placing higher demands on facility power systems.

In terms of technological trends, safety and sustainability have become explicit constraints in procurement: higher short-circuit capacity, internal arc protection, and online monitoring/digital operation and maintenance have shifted from "value-added features" to "entry thresholds". Europe's F-gas Regulation is advancing the SF6-free transition of medium-voltage switchgear, imposing restrictions on new installations of certain voltage levels starting from 2026 and driving the penetration of SF6-free solutions. On the supply side, the market is still affected by the long lead times of key power equipment.
