Cathode Slurry is a semi-liquid mixture used in the manufacturing of lithium-ion battery cathodes, consisting primarily of cathode active materials (such as Lithium Iron Phosphate, Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide, or Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminum Oxide), conductive additives (typically carbon black or carbon nanotubes), polymeric binders (commonly Polyvinylidene Fluoride), and solvents (usually N‑Methyl‑2‑pyrrolidone) that are mixed together to form a homogeneous paste. In the lithium-ion battery supply chain, upstream industries provide precursor metals and chemicals (lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese salts), cathode active materials, conductive carbon, binders, and organic solvents, which are supplied by specialty chemical and battery material manufacturers. Midstream battery cell manufacturers then use high-precision mixing and dispersion equipment to prepare the cathode slurry, which is subsequently coated onto aluminum foil current collectors, dried to remove solvent, and processed into cathode electrode sheets. Downstream, these electrodes are assembled into lithium-ion battery cells used in electric vehicles, consumer electronics, grid energy storage systems, and industrial batteries, making cathode slurry a critical intermediate material linking advanced battery chemistry production with large-scale battery cell manufacturing. In 2025, global Cathode Slurry output was about 8.0 million tons with 12 million tons of capacity, average prices of USD 1,100 – 1,600 per ton, and gross margins around 21%.
