According to the report, soldiers carry a substantial amount of weight during any combat mission including the equipment and protective clothing. Every piece of armor that soldiers wear except the eye protection consists of a textile component. Conventional blast protection systems and protective armor were bulky and caused fatigue, which affected the mobility of soldiers. However, the introduction of smart textiles in the military clothing has enhanced its capabilities and functions and also reduced the total weight that soldiers need to carry.
Further, the report states that smart textiles may not be easy to clean and maintain as sensors and actuators are integrated into them. This equipment is required to be kept away from chemicals and frequent washing, as even a small breakage in the continuity of the circuit may damage its proper functioning. Electronic components may get detached during cleaning, which again is likely to pose a threat when it comes to properly fitting back the devices onto the uniform.
