Network analyzers are instruments that assist generation and analysis on multiple channels. These are usually costlier than spectrum analyzers and vector instruments and are typically used to measure scattering parameters (also known as S-parameters) and other characteristics of RF waves and high-frequency radiation. The primary use of network analyzers is to determine the S-parameters of many sets of passive components like cables, filters, switches, and much more. Also, network analyzers can be enabled on active devices like transistors and amplifiers using S-parameters, until they operate in their linear mode of operation.

De-embedding ensures finding of losses between the device under test and the automatic test equipment (ATE) system either in scalar or vector form. The losses are used to counterbalance the value of an RF measurement obtained by the ATE system. Generally, the procedure uses the measurements found by using short, open, and load calibration standards and performs some mathematical operations to resolve the equations. Throughout testing, the key concern is the uniformity of off-chip interconnects and the interface with the ATE, sockets, probes, load board, and so forth. This has a direct impact on measured behavior, and an accurate measurement can be only achieved by a painful de-embedding procedure.
