Factors, such as a large screen size with a high resolution for a better ultra-HD video streaming experience, are increasing the video traffic. Moreover, substrate materials account for 30%-50% of the cost of the SiC-based microwave devices, while the traditional Si-based power device substrates account for only 5%-7%. However, the lower specific on-resistance of SiC-based microwave devices helps achieve higher currents in SiC wafers compared with Si wafers of the same size. Hence, SiC substrates and epitaxial layers are currently more expensive than Si. However, they can be competitive with Si substrates on a cost/area basis. Factors such as the localized heating and current leakage near impurities and crystal defects (exacerbated at high currents) should be prevented to take full advantage of the low specific on-resistance of SiC.
