Global Microwave Devices Market 2017-2021

Global Microwave Devices Market 2017-2021

About Microwave Devices

Microwaves are electromagnetic waves that have wavelengths in the range of 1GHz to 300GHz. Microwave devices can generate, amplify, modify, detect, or measure microwaves or voltages with microwave frequencies. There are two types of microwave devices: solid-state devices and vacuum-tube-based devices. Semiconductors, such as silicon (Si) or gallium arsenide (GaAs), are used in solid-state microwave devices. Microwave devices are mainly used in communication, navigation, radar, radio astronomy, heating, and spectroscopy applications. Backward diodes, Gunn diodes, IMPATT diodes, Schottky diodes, tunnel diodes, varactor diodes, transistors, and monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) are some of the predominant microwave devices in the industry. Technavio’s analysts forecast the global microwave devices market to decline at a CAGR of 7.63% during the period 2017-2021.

Press Releases

Technavio Announces the Publication of its Research Report – Global Microwave Devices Market 2017-2021

Technavio recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global microwave devices market: API Technologies, L3 Technologies, Qorvo, and Teledyne Technologies.

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Thales, Richardson Electronics, and TMD Technologies.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from Technavio’s team said: “The latest trend gaining momentum in the market is Emergence of high-power electronic devices. The end-users have high expectations and they want products that are prompt, innovative, lightweight, energy efficient, and small in size, leading to the emergence of SiC and GaN technologies. The GaN and SiC technologies, when equipped in the modern high-power devices, are delivering high speed, accuracy, and reliability. They are energy efficient and are small enough to fit into small devices.”

According to the report, one of the major drivers for this market is Rapid increase in data traffic. The increased use of smartphones, tablets, and other wireless communication devices are increasing the mobile data traffic. The increase in the mobile video content is another factor that increases the mobile data traffic. The mobile data crossing a network will exceed 45 exabytes per month, and video traffic will account for more than 73% of the total data consumed by 2021. Factors, such as a large screen size with a high resolution for a better ultra-HD video streaming experience, are increasing the video traffic. Therefore, to increase the capability and reduce the cost per bit, mobile network operators are increasingly focusing on enhancing the network infrastructure.

Further, the report states that one of the major factors hindering the growth of this market is High cost of production. The SiC and GaN-based microwave devices are gaining traction in the market. Moreover, substrate materials account for 30%-50% of the cost of the SiC-based microwave devices, while the traditional Si-based power device substrates account for only 5%-7%. However, the lower specific on-resistance of SiC-based microwave devices helps achieve higher currents in SiC wafers compared with Si wafers of the same size. Hence, SiC substrates and epitaxial layers are currently more expensive than Si. However, they can be competitive with Si substrates on a cost/area basis. Factors such as the localized heating and current leakage near impurities and crystal defects (exacerbated at high currents) should be prevented to take full advantage of the low specific on-resistance of SiC.
