Commenting on the report, an analyst from Technavio’s team said: “SSD storage is commonly known as flash storage and offers more efficiency compared to the traditional HDD storage device. Currently, the cost of flash storage is several times more than that of HDD storage. Vendors are continuously decreasing the price of their products because of the increasing demand among enterprise data centers. It is expected that flash storage usage in an enterprise environment will be more than that of HDD by the end of the forecast period. The overall market will experience steady growth from flash storage systems during the forecast period.”
According to the report, servers earlier used to consume around 50-80 watts, but the average power now consumed by servers is 300 watts. This means that servers consume 27.80% of the total power consumption of data centers. Consumption depends on the type of servers, processors, and the RAM. This power consumption is a significant factor in the OPEX of data centers worldwide. Most installed IT equipment consumes power even when not in use.
Further, the report states that virtualization software helps in partitioning the physical IT infrastructure into smaller virtual infrastructures to maximize their utilization. Through virtualization, resources are hidden or masked. Many organizations are consolidating data centers to save capital and OPEX. Data center consolidation through virtualization reduces the overall footprint of data centers, hindering the adoption of server, storage, and network infrastructure in the data center.
