Topology of the Edge — Exploring Architecture Alternatives for the MEC

The telco edge is the next frontier for distributed cloud computing and will involve expertise from IT, cloud services, storage area networks, containerization, and VMs. The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) framework and follow-on work by associated international standards bodies have generated data plane specifications for IT companies to proceed to build edge hosts, edge orchestrators, and storage area networks (SANs) for the telco edge. Apart from the technical design, communications SPs will need to develop their business strategies for telco edge in phases, focusing on pricing models and understanding the impact of opex/capex as usage expands. "The optimal density of telco edge infrastructure is achieved when it is carefully paired with 5G network including the fiber access and transport metro and backbone network," says Bill Rojas, adjunct research director, IDC. "Moreover, the ability to share the same edge network function virtualization infrastructure between end-user edge applications will lead to reduced capex and enhanced operational efficiencies and ultimately make scaling a reality."
