IDC Perspective: Smart City Best Practices in the Philippines: Beyond Just Connecting Citizens

This IDC Perspective discusses various challenges and opportunities for Smart Cities in the Philippines. IDC thinks that the main drive for the cities to deploy digital solutions lies with respective city leaders and the national government to address challenges faced by residents of the Philippines. The Philippine Development Plan (PDP) 2017–2022 and Smart City initiatives by the respective authorities, along with a defined strategic approach, will enhance Smart City adoption in the country.“The COVID-19 pandemic has further accelerated several local government and Smart City initiatives in the Philippines. Core areas of accelerated ICT deployment for local governments in the Philippines include new digital innovations for operations automation and constituent-eccentric digital experiences, digital healthcare and social welfare, digital education and technology-enabled workforce development, cybersecurity, and emergency communications," concludes Gerald Wang, IDC's head for public sector, Asia/Pacific.
