Industry Clouds — A Primer on the Storm Brewing ""Above the Cloud""
This IDC study introduces the concept of the "industry cloud," a new business model emerging directly from the proliferation of the 3rd Platform. While the 3rd Platform is industry agnostic and horizontal in nature, industry clouds are vertically specific and deep rooted in industry expertise.
Eric Newmark, program director for IDC Health Insights comments, "Industry clouds are emerging by the dozens per month across all industries, and we expect the total number to exceed 100 by early 2016. Unlike the 3rd Platform where the complexities reside around technology, the intricacies of industry clouds are more focused on understanding of business operations and expertise in industry-specific nuances. As a result, the industry cloud space will be dominated by line-of-business (LOB) buyers, since this is not something that a CIO should navigate without a subject matter expert or business leader in tow. We truly see LOB2LOB becoming the new B2B, and at its current rate of growth, IDC anticipates that industry cloud platforms will disrupt one-third of the top 20 market leaders in most industries by 2018. Furthermore, because of the deep-seated industry expertise that industry clouds will offer their subscribers, it will be very hard for hardware, software, and services vendors to compete with these solutions from the outside, which is why it is critical that vendors quickly increase their visibility to the development of all-new industry clouds so they can align themselves appropriately while each opportunity is still on the ground floor."Please Note: Extended description available upon request.
