5G and Optical Network Transformation in Asia/Pacific
5G will require advanced coherent optical technologies, software defined networking control, service orchestration, and automation of the optical network, including XHaul, midhaul, and backhaul. Starting from day one, the fronthaul will require a minimum of 25GE ports at the remote radio units and this will rapidly increase to requiring at least 50GE. Consequently, it is imperative that from the beginning, SPs design for the anticipated capacity, while utilizing cloud-native technologies to provide for an agile, adaptive, and programmable optical network. "The optical transport challenges are significant for CSPs," says Bill Rojas, adjunct research director, IDC's Asia/Pacific Communications Group. However, he adds that "NEPs have invested significant resources in solving the technical challenges to provide a five-year road map for CSPs to invest in."
