Summary

Global ethylene capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the next nine years, potentially increasing from about 184 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) in 2017 to over 260mtpa in 2026. Around 116 planned and announced plants are slated to come online in the next nine years, primarily in Asia and the Middle East. A total of nine new ethylene plants were announced since the previous report was published in December 2017.In Asia, China has 29 planned and announced ethylene plants, with a total capacity of about 14.5 mtpa by 2021. Capital expenditure (capex) for these plants is around US$9 billion. Major capacity additions will be from China Petrochemical Corporation. In the Middle East, Iran has 17 planned and announced ethylene plants, expected to start operations with a total capacity of about 10mtpa by 2023. Capex for these plants totals over US$6.5 billion over the next nine years. Major capacity additions will be from SepehrMakran Iran and Kangan Petro Refining Co. Major capacity additions will be from Formosa Plastics Group and Exxon Mobil Corporation. In the Former Soviet Union, most ethylene capacity additions are in Russia, with capacity of about 8.9 mtpa by 2024. Capex for these plants totals just over US$8 billion by 2024. Far East Petrochemical Company and Sibur Holding are the top companies accounting for the major capacity additions in Russia. In South America, Venezuela and Bolivia together plan to add capacity of 1.4 mtpa, expected to come on stream by 2023. Capex for these plants totals about US$1 billion. In Africa, Egypt plans to spend over US$4.5 billion and add capacity of about 1.7 mtpa, expected to come on stream by 2021. China Petrochemical Corp, Total SA, and Zhejiang Petrochemical Co Ltd are the top three companies by planned capacity additions globally over the next nine years. The Dow Chemical Co, Saudi Basic Industries Corp, and Exxon Mobil Corporation are the top global producers of ethylene, with capacities of around 12.7 mtpa, 11.4 mtpa, and 8.5 mtpa, respectively, in 2017.The report Quarterly Global Ethylene Capacity and Capital Expenditure Outlook - China Petrochemical Corp and Total SA Lead Global Capacity Additions, provides an overview of understand key trends in the global ethylene industry; understand regional ethylene supply scenario; identify opportunities in the global ethylene industry with the help of upcoming plants and capital expenditure outlook; and understand the current and future competitive scenario.
