Description
Bangladesh Construction Market Size, Trend Analysis by Sector (Commercial, Industrial, Infrastructure, Energy and Utilities, Institutional and Residential) and Forecast, 2023-2027
Summary
The construction industry in Bangladesh is expected to expand by 2.1% in 2023, supported by investments as part of the FY2022/2023 Annual Development Program (ADP). The National Economic Council approved the Revised Annual Development Program (RADP) in March 2023 that includes an allocation of BDT2.3 trillion ($22.3 billion), prioritizing the transport and communication sector. A total of 1,525 projects are included under the RADP, of which, 1,410 are investment projects and 115 are technical assistance projects. The growth will also be supported by the launch of the national bridge program in January 2023 by the country’s Roads and Highways Department. The program involves the construction of 14 bridges across Mymensingh, Barishal, Chattogram and Khulna. The country is expected to receive a BDT154.8 billion ($1.5 billion) loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in May 2023. In addition, the World Bank will provide a BDT51.6 billion ($500 million) loan in May 2023 and another BDT98 billion ($950 million) will be provided by Japan, Asian Development Bank (ADB), and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) by the end of May 2023.
The Bangladeshi construction industry is expected to register an annual average growth rate of 6.4% from 2024 to 2027, supported by investment in energy, transport, industrial and telecommunication infrastructure projects. Growth over the forecast period will be supported by the construction of a power distribution system under the Modernization of Power Distribution System Program. Under this program, in February 2023, the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) received a BDT17 billion ($165 million) from Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). The construction works are expected to commence by the end of 2023 and are scheduled to be completed by June 2025. As part of the Eighth Five-Year Plan (8FYP) approved in December 2021, the government aims to increase the total installed electricity generation capacity from 24GW in FY2020/2021 to 30GW by FY2024/2025 and increase the share of renewable energy in the total electricity mix from 4.5% to 10% and the length of the targeted new railway network from 3,400km to 3,800km during the same period.
