A hearing aid is a battery-powered electrical device that helps hearing-impaired patients hear better. Hearing aids work by amplifying sound in three stages, the microphone absorbs the sound and converts it into a digital signal, the amplifier amplifies the digital signal, and the speaker sends the amplified sound to the ear. A hearing aid amplifies sound waves as they reach the ear. There are different types of hearing aids including behind-the-ear (BTE), in-the-ear (ITE) and in-the-canal (ITC) hearing aids. With behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids, most of the parts are contained in a small plastic case that rests behind the ear. In-the-ear (ITE) hearing aids are contained in a shell on the outside of the ear. The basic common features of hearing aids include the presence of a directional microphone, the ‘T-Coil’ setting to cancel out ambient noise for better hearing of the sound picked up by the phone, and Feedback Cancellation (FS).
