As of 2014, Chile remains the largest copper producing country in the world, having six of the world's ten largest copper mines. The other four copper mines are located in Mexico, Peru and Indonesia. The Escondida copper mine in Chile's Atacama Desert is at present the largest copper mine in the world according to its copper reserves. At the end of 2012, the Escondida copper mine contained more than 32 million tons of recoverable copper reserves. Escondida is also one of the ten deepest open pit mines in the world.

The second biggest copper mine in the world is the Cananea copper mine or the Buenavista copper mine, located in Mexico. This open pit copper mine had reserves of approximately 26.87 million tons of copper at the end of 2012.

Chile also has the third biggest copper mine in the world, which is the Collahuasi copper mine that had proven copper reserves of 25.89 million tons at the end of 2012. The Andina copper mine, the fourth largest copper mine in the world, is also located in Chile and it contained estimated reserves of 18.8 million tons of copper at the beginning of 2013.
