AbstractThis IDC study (a translation of the Japanese document IDC #J12310107) examines the application deployment software market, which is made up of two submarkets ? applications server middleware and integration and process automation middleware — based on IDC's Japan Software Taxonomy, 2012. Besides analyzing the market's performance in 2011, we also provide forecast for 2012–2016. "Amid rapid changes in the business environment, companies are shifting their focus from IT aimed at maintaining existing assets to that aimed at raising company value on a continued basis. Unlike infrastructure spending aimed mainly at reducing costs, companies looking at middleware spending need to explore how the middleware and related applications would contribute to their business whether directly or indirectly. Other than raising the company value of their customers, proposals from systems integration vendors should also look at the applicability of clouds in future companywide architecture. Whether from the management or technical perspective, it will be necessary for application deployment software vendors to beef up their portfolios with products that remove barriers to overall optimization," says Yuko Tominaga, senior analyst, Software and Security, IDC Japan.
