Key Highlights

Deals activity records a significant increase in July
Deal value in the defense industry witnessed a steep growth, from US$3.6 billion in June 2012 to US$7.1 billion in July. This increase in deal activity was largely due to a significant contribution from the Asia-Pacific and North American regions, which exhibited month-on-month increases of 233% and 37% respectively.

The North American region holds the major share in deal activity
North America dominates the defense sector in terms of both deal volume and value. This can be largely attributed to the fact that the US houses the largest number of defense companies in the world and these companies are focused on growing by acquiring other companies which cater to niche segments that have significant growth potential.

Increasing deal activity in the C4ISR electronics and IT segment
Deal activity in the C4ISR electronics and IT segment registered a monthly increase of 4%, posting 29 transactions worth a total of US$1,852.5 million. The US$900.0 million merger of DigitalGlobe with GeoEye was the major deal driving the month’s deal activity in the segment.

Strong partnership activity recorded in July
In July, strategic partnership activity accounted for 36.2% of the months total deal volume in the defense industry, and represented a 25% increase over the previous month.
