AbstractAnimal health is generally related to providing a quality life to the animals. Mainly, the animal health market includes products like, vaccines, antibiotics, anthelmintics, antifungals, parasiticides, and medical feed additives, which help in improving the overall quality of life of the animals. The year 2009 marked a decline in the continuously increasing animal health market, as a result of trimmed expenditure by the people on animals due to the negative impact of recessionary conditions. But with the stabilization of the global economic conditions, the market also got stabilized.
There are many ways to categorize the animal health market. One way is to categorize on the basis of species of animals, companion or livestock. The food producing animals hold a major share in the global market as a result of increase in the demand for animal proteins. Another way is to categorize the market on the basis of products used, and the three major sub segments in this category include pharmaceuticals, biologics and medicinal feed additives. Pharmaceuticals, including the parasiticides, anti-infectives and other pharmaceuticals represent the largest category, followed by biological or vaccines. Among all the segments, biologicals (or vaccines) and antiparasitics are likely to drive the animal health market in the coming years. The future increase in the vaccines market is mainly due to the positive approach towards preventive treatment rather than curative one.
Regionally, the global animal health care market is dominated by the Americas and Europe. Together the two regions hold more than three-fourth of the global market.
In the years to come, the animal health market worldwide is expected to grow further. One major reason for this expected increase is the growing intimation between the pets and their owners. With this, the owners generally treat their pets as their family members and try to provide them with all the facilities. Also, with the increasing global population, the demand for food is also set to increase. With the limited arable land, the livestock animals can prove out to be important sources of maintaining food security. All these factors would lead to an increasing use of animal health products. Another major factor driving the animal health market includes preventing the spread of zoonotic diseases, i.e. those having their origination in the animals.
The global animal health market is consolidated with top ten players controlling majority share of the market. In fact, the consolidation is likely to intensify further in the coming years.
