AbstractDiagnostic Imaging in Developing Economies: A Closer Look at AccessibilitySummary Patient access to diagnostic imaging in emerging economies varies across different economic regions within the same country. Patients living in bigger and mid-sized cities of high growth economic regions have higher access to diagnostic imaging due to higher affordability of patients, higher number of insured population and increased investments in diagnostic imaging equipment by private sector. Patients living in smaller cities and rural areas of both high growth and low growth economic regions have low access to diagnostic imaging. Patients living in smaller cities and rural areas of high growth economic regions have higher affordability; however the availability of diagnostic imaging equipment is lower. This is due to low private sector investments and lesser number of referring physicians. In low growth economic regions, patients living in smaller and rural cities have low access due to low affordability of patients. Expanding health insurance to include low income population, buying used equipment, incentives for private sector and physicians and increase in government investments in healthcare sector are suggested as possible remedies to improve the accessibility of diagnostic imaging to patients.
