The Federal Government of Canada (FGOC) through its transport wing Transport Canada (TC) is planning to construct an airport in Ontario, Canada.
The project involves the construction of a new airport on 3,520ha of land.
The project includes the construction of an airport terminal, a cargo terminal, runways and taxi ways, approach roads, terminal buildings, check-in counter and parking slots, and the installation of safety and security systems.
In 2011, the study was concluded and Pickering was selected as an ideal location for the project. The report recommended the federal government to use the land it acquired in 1972.
Transport Canada will follow the prescribed regulatory process to amend the Pickering Airport site designation and the Pickering Airport Zoning Regulations. Transport Canada also plans to engage stakeholders through public consultation.
On June 11, 2013, the federal government finalized their plans to undertake the project development works.
In May 2016, Transport Canada appointed KPMG Corporate Finance Inc. to undertake a Pickering Lands Aviation Sector Analysis.
Study activities are underway and scheduled to be completed in 2018. However, the project is facing opposition from the local residents.
