Ministry of Transport, Egypt (MoT) is planning to build a high-speed railway line in Egypt.
The project involves the construction of a 900km two-way high-speed railway line from Alexandria to Aswan in three stages.
It includes the construction of five stations, maintenance sheds, administrative centers, control centers, bridges and related infrastructure, the installation of signaling and safety systems, and the laying of railway tracks.
The first stage of the project includes the construction of a 210km high-speed railway line from Alexandria to Cairo.
The second and third stages of high-speed railway connecting Cairo to Assiut and Assiut to Aswan will each have up to 345km in length.
The project will feature five stations on the line at Alexandria, Giza, Assiut, Luxor, and Aswan.
China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd and Rete Ferroviaria Italiana Spa have been appointed as study consultants.
On May 29, 2014, MoT issued a request for proposal (RFP) to select a study consultant with submission deadline on June 12, 2014.
In December 2014, MoT and China Harbor Engineering Company signed an initial agreement to develop the project.
In February 2015, MoT signed an agreement with Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane to conduct study on the project.
In April 2016, the Egyptian Ministry of Transport announced that it could launch an initial public offering to finance the construction of a high-speed railway.
MoT is seeking investors to fund the development.
In November 2017, Thales has been appointed a contractor for the first stage.
