Profile of Odlo: a pioneer in technical base layers and outdoor performance apparel
Description
Odlo is a company based in Hünenberg, Switzerland, which manufactures performance apparel and specialises in the design and production of technical clothing for outdoor and endurance sports.
The company employs some 800 members of staff worldwide, maintains a comprehensive retail presence in Europe, and distributes its products to more than 35 countries.
The company is said to be one of the world’s largest producers of base layers.
In fact, it pioneered the Athletic Clothing System, a three-layer principle which comprises a base layer, a middle layer and an outer layer.
Odlo is owned by Monte Rosa Sport and it operates a partially vertically integrated supply chain which it shares with its sister brands, Henri-Lloyd and Janus Wool, which are also owned by Monte Rosa Sport.
Odlo occupies a clearly defined position in the global outdoor apparel market as a premium technical layering specialist which competes against more than 25 other companies. Odlo’s ability to sustain this position is attributable to its targeted sponsorships and to the strategic appointment of elite brand ambassadors who reinforce its technical credibility, Nordic heritage and presence in the outdoor apparel market.
Furthermore, Odlo distinguishes itself through sustained commitment to environmental sustainability, social responsibility and ongoing product innovation.
Its most notable innovations include a snowboarding base layer collection which it developed in collaboration with Burton, a base layer collection featuring a temperature regulating heating system which it developed in collaboration with Clim8, an innovation project which involved the chemical recycling of production waste into virgin-quality recycled polyester fabric which it developed in collaboration with DePoly, and garments made using a proprietary yarn spinning technology called Nuyarn which it developed in collaboration with TMC.
