Editorial: Prospects for graphene in technical textile markets threatened by barriers to commercialisation
Graphene is considered by many to be a "wonder material". It possesses several extraordinary properties but most notably, it is the thinnest and strongest material ever tested. The properties of graphene make it ideal for use in a wide range of high value applications, including technical textile applications such as fibre reinforced composites, finishes, industrial coatings, smart textiles, and treatments. And yet the commercial exploitation of graphene has so far been limited. Generally, this limitation is a result of persistent challenges associated with scaling production, high costs and a lack of standardisation. Also, unknowns regarding the impact of graphene on the environment and human health continue to cause concern for its widespread adoption. Looking ahead, however, prospects for the graphene market look positive. Within the global market, the fibre reinforced composites segment in particular is forecast to demonstrate significant growth between 2022 and 2030. For now though, shortcomings in the commercial exploitation of graphene have left lingering question marks on the viability of the material.
