Superhard tool materials are a type of cutting tool materials with extremely high hardness (usually exceeding Mohs hardness 8), mainly including synthetic diamond (PCD), cubic boron nitride (CBN) and nano-composite coatings (such as TiAlN), which are widely used in aerospace, automobile manufacturing, mold processing and precision machinery. Its excellent hardness, wear resistance and high temperature resistance (can withstand up to 1000°C) enable it to efficiently cut high-hardness materials (such as hardened steel, titanium alloys and composites), significantly improving processing accuracy and surface quality. For example, in the aviation industry, superhard tools are used to process turbine blades; in the automotive industry, they are used for finishing of engine blocks. The preparation process of superhard tool materials is complex, usually involving high-pressure high-temperature synthesis (HPHT) or chemical vapor deposition (CVD), requiring high-purity raw materials (such as carbon and boron) and precision equipment to ensure material uniformity and defect control.

Superhard tool materials have performed well in the field of high-precision machining, but their advantages and disadvantages have sparked widespread discussion. Supporters believe that their high hardness and wear resistance significantly improve cutting efficiency and tool life. For example, when machining high-hardness steel, the life of CBN tools can reach more than 10 times that of traditional cemented carbide, reducing tool change downtime; in the machining of aviation parts, its high-precision cutting reduces the need for subsequent polishing and reduces production costs.
