Description

A relay is an electrical control device. It is an electrical appliance that causes a predetermined step change in the controlled quantity in the electrical output circuit when the change in the input quantity (excitation quantity) reaches the specified requirements. It plays the role of automatic adjustment, safety protection, and conversion circuit in the circuit, and is widely used in power systems, industrial automation, smart homes, automotive electronics and other fields.

The working principle of the relay is based on electromagnetic induction and mechanical movement. Common electromagnetic relays are mainly composed of electromagnets, contact systems, reaction springs and brackets. When the coil of the relay is energized, the electromagnet generates electromagnetic suction, attracts the armature to move, and closes the normally open contacts of the contact system and disconnects the normally closed contacts, thereby switching the circuit. When the coil is de-energized, the electromagnetic suction disappears, and the armature returns to its original position under the action of the reaction spring, and the contact system also returns to its original state. In addition to electromagnetic relays, there are solid-state relays, which use electronic components (such as transistors, thyristors, etc.) to realize the on-off control of the circuit. There are no mechanical contacts, and have the advantages of fast switching speed, long life, high reliability, and no contact sparks.

From a structural point of view, the electromagnet of the electromagnetic relay is composed of an iron core, a coil and a yoke, and is a key component for generating electromagnetic attraction. The contact system includes a moving contact and a static contact. According to different control requirements, there are various forms such as normally open contacts, normally closed contacts and switching contacts. The reaction spring is used to provide a force opposite to the electromagnetic attraction to ensure that the armature can be reliably reset when the power is off. Solid-state relays are generally composed of an input circuit, an isolation circuit and an output circuit. The input circuit is used to receive control signals, the isolation circuit is used to achieve electrical isolation between input and output, improve safety and anti-interference capabilities, and the output circuit controls the on and off of the load circuit according to the input signal.

Relays can be classified in various ways. According to the working principle, in addition to the electromagnetic relays and solid-state relays mentioned above, there are also thermal relays, time relays, temperature relays, etc. Thermal relays work on the principle of thermal effect of current. When an overload current appears in the circuit, the thermal element heats up to bend the bimetallic strip, thereby pushing the contact to move and achieve overload protection. A time relay is an automatic switch that uses electromagnetic or mechanical principles to achieve delay control. It can be divided into power-on delay type and power-off delay type. It is often used to control the start and stop time of motors in industrial automation control. Temperature relays control the on and off of circuits according to temperature changes and are often used for overheat protection of electrical equipment. According to their uses, they can be divided into control relays and protection relays. Control relays are mainly used to control the on and off of circuits to achieve functions such as signal conversion and amplification; protection relays are used to protect electrical equipment. When a circuit fails (such as overload, short circuit, undervoltage, etc.), the circuit is cut off in time to prevent equipment damage.

In the application field, relays are everywhere. In the power system, various protection relays are used to monitor and protect power equipment such as transmission lines, transformers, and generators to ensure the safe and stable operation of the power system. For example, when a short circuit occurs in a transmission line, the short-circuit protection relay can act quickly to cut off the faulty line and prevent the accident from expanding. In the field of industrial automation, relays are widely used in automated production lines, machine tool control, etc. to achieve control of motors, solenoid valves, signal lights and other equipment. Through the cooperation of programmable logic controller (PLC) and relay, complex automatic control logic can be realized. In the smart home system, relays are used to control home appliances such as lights, curtains, air conditioners, and water heaters. Users can remotely control the on and off of relays through mobile phone APP or smart control panel to realize intelligent control of home appliances. In the field of automotive electronics, relays are used to control the start, lighting, wipers, window lifting and other systems of the car to ensure the normal operation of the car.

With the continuous advancement of science and technology, relays are also developing continuously. In the future, relays will develop in the direction of miniaturization, intelligence, high reliability and environmental protection. In terms of miniaturization, by adopting advanced manufacturing processes and new materials, the volume and weight of relays can be reduced to meet the needs of miniaturization and lightweight of electronic equipment.
